Another typical week in the life of a Gillingham fan, encompassing the full range of emotions us football fans endure on account of our beloved, but nonetheless infuriating teams.

Tuesday´s match at home to Darlington was petering out into a frustrating 0-0 before a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time gave us all three points, and a rare feeling of last-gasp elation. But that soon turned to deflation on Saturday as Grant Holt´s late, late equaliser for Shrewsbury meant the Gills let a two goal lead evaporate in the final quarter of an hour.

And to think it was all going so well. For once my radio commentary wasn´t stuttering, allowing me to join ranks with the Rainham End, who, seven thousand miles away, were absolutely rocking as the game kicked off. Manager Mark Stimson had issued a rallying call in midweek for the fans to be more vocal, and they certainly didn´t disappoint.  Three minutes in, Curtis Weston raised the roof even higher as he struck gold with a twenty-five yard volley, a stand-out contender for goal of the season. When Nicky Southall fired home after the break the live table showed us floating in the dizzy heights of second, in the automatic spots for the first time this season. Life couldn´t get any better. I should have known better.

But it wouldn´t be the same supporting Gillingham if you´re nerves, and sanity, weren´t tested on a regular basis.

We now sit in sixth, tied on points with third, and the prospect of a nervy couple of months in store.

There are plenty of positives to cling on to. We are now seven games unbeaten, with a number of players starting to find form just at the right time. Simeon Jackson, our top goal-scorer, has started to find some form as well as the net again (albeit a tap-in and a penalty) after a recent dry patch, helped in no small part by Mark McCammon. Our big target man is finally fit and firing on all cylinders, causing havoc up front and creating chances for others to exploit. Veteran Nicky Southall seems to have found a new lease of life, with consistent performances that continue to defy the years.

The worrying thing is promotion is vital if we are to hang on to the nucleus of our squad. Jackson was rumoured to have attracted interest from Villa during the transfer window after his screamer against them in the Cup, while this week Stimson stated his belief that he is destined for bigger things. Spurs loanee Andy Barcham has looked a class apart since his arrival, and would surely get an offer from elsewhere were we to remain in the bottom tier. Curtis Weston has been our driving force in midfield, and his goal on Saturday will certainly turn a few heads.

Yet I would argue our prized asset is defender Simon King, whose tireless effort and hard graft have made sure we are still in a position to push for promotion. Clichéd it may sound, but he is quite literally our rock, proof of which can be found by what happens when he is not on the pitch. Pandemonium ensued at home to Aldershot when he was forced to withdraw with an injury, as we watched a 3-1 lead turn into a 3-4 deficit, while there was an air of inevitability about Saturday´s result after he hobbled off with the store at 2-1.

However, let´s not get ahead of ourselves. Before discussing players´ futures we need to determine our own, but in a league as unpredictable as League Two we will surely have to wait some time before any conclusions can be drawn. We still face daunting away trips to the current top three, as well as tricky fixtures at Grimsby, who are in a real scrap for their football league status, and Chesterfield, who with games in hand are mounting a late charge for the play-offs.

Only three of our remaining nine fixtures are at home, one of which is against promotion rivals Bury. Anything could happen – an imperious run of form that sees us go straight up, or a nightmare run of results that means we finish nearer to mid-table. Our next three games, away to Notts County on Tuesday and Grimsby on Saturday, followed by a home game to Barnet stand out as our most winnable, so I am hoping for as many points as possible to have been banked by the time we travel to Brentford, with what is shaping up to be a huge away crowd.

This week a petition started by fans to bring back our kit from the turn of the millenium started to pick up pace. Smart and unique, certainly, but I think the affection for the kit lies in the nostalgia of how the Gills were doing at the time. The last time the Gills donned the blue and black stripes we were mixing it at the top of what was then Division Two, culminating in two successive play-off finals at Wembley, both of which would be hard to top for excitement and drama, be it the heartache of 1999 against Man City or the jubilation against Wigan in 2000.

As we approach the home straight I can´t help but think we are destined for another rollercoaster ride in the lottery that is the football league play-offs. But then you can never be sure of anything with Gillingham. One thing is for sure, it will go right to the wire. Which is precisely why I have decided to fly home early for the last game of the season: Rochdale away on the second of May. I´ll see you all there. COYG!

Don't know how I've reached the age of 43 following the Gills, my blood pressure goes through the roof every season! It's a tough run in, but I've got a good feeling we'll be ok.Good article - keep spreading the word!

Another top article, i feel i can relate since i am a student now at Birmingham University as well as an exile previously so games are hard to come by for me.

Agree with the point about Simon King, clearly a player with potential for much higher things and one can only hope that it is with the Gills. However Simeon Jackson concerns me with his too often tendancy to get hot headed in front of goal and try to burst the ball (ala Aston Villa when it happily came off, not so against Accrington Stanley). I hope over time he will learn and gain some composure.

There is something inside me that realy wants the playoffs, it has been nearly 10 years since my first football match; Gillingham v Man City, and i feel we have some history to wipe out if we were to go to the new Wembley and put to bed those horrible memories (i am aware we may have done that the year after again st Wigan, but 10 years later would really rule a line under it). I long for a rendition of the last waltz ringing around wembley stadium with the fellow Gills fans.

Keep up the good work!!!

I couldn't make Saturday's game and the last text I got from my mates was about Southall's second. I only found out about the two Shrewsbury goals later - they didn't want to spoil my afternoon!
It's a pain in the arse following these boys, but the rare moment sof glory make it all worthwhile.

Come on you blue boys!

Great articles Tom like you i live away from the Uk and follow portuguese football.
I started the season with my Portuguese mates thinking I was another ex-pat nutter, but recently Sporting Lisbon took a bit of a drubbing and the GILLS have gone on a run and find them selves in a play-off spot so now we have a Portuguese fan base!!!!!! That is until we take a drubbing or cock up big time and as a Gills fan for over 40 years and it will happen and at a time when we least want it too.
Great column and you have a new fan.
As foir tonight UP THE GILLLLSSSSSS
3 points is a must ( will this be one of those days ) ??????? HOPE NOT

I couldnt agree more. I really dont understand what the attraction is with supporting the Gills, but once it is in your blood there is no choice. Must admit, there are times when I wish my Mum could have given birth elsewhere (somewhere around Anfield would suit).

Still, its the first season for a long time where we havent been fighting the drop or settling for mid table oblivion, so lets be grateful for small mercies - at least we are still in with a chance of the playoffs. It was never going to be easy was it? Supporting Gillingham should carry a health warning.

COME ON YOU GILLS!!!

Great article.

Fingers crossed for tonight's game against Notts City which could see us head up to 2nd in the table. Can't help but feel disappointed after conceding two late goals to the Shrews so lets hope for better tonight!

great article

if anyone remembers a few years ago when we went on our 6 game winning streak, in that was a match at sounthend where if southend won they were promoted then, i reckon the same scenario will be that of brentford, so if we win the next 2 games, then lets hope lightning strikes twice!!!

I need to call British Airways tomorrow to confirm, at the moment I am, but if they cannot find me a seat or whatever then I will come back in time for the play-offs, since I, like Robbo, think that´s where we are heading.

But either way I cannot WAIT.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.

Three points tonight please boys, COYG!

Another great article!!

I honestly believe that if scientists did a study then they would find out that Gills fans probably live shorter lives because their hearts and minds take a battering.

I think we need 6 points from next 2 and then make sure we dont lose v Brentford.

Its all getting Exciting!!!

A brilliant article (as always), you've got it spot on once again.

Next time people ask me why I support Gillingham I shall just show them this :)

But seriously, keep it up; get the publicity you deserve and if I was the BBC, I'd definitely give you a shot.

And by the way, I don't think the Rochdale match will matter for the autos. but I can see it being the difference between 4th (with semis against exeter) or 5th (semis against Bury), so actually I reckon it will make alot of difference.
UTG! and well done once more x

Another great article Tom, and its good to see from so many comments that others are clearly as insane as us! I went through the whole spectrum of emotions on Saturday, from sheer ectasy to downright miserable and wondered yet again why I've put myself through it for 40 years. Still, I know I'll be there at 7.45 tonight on gillsworld commentary, COME ON YOU GILLS. Remember a great match at Notts County a few years back where we clinched a play off place (you'll correct me if I'm wrong, Tom, maybe we alreday had) It was a fantastic day, great atmosphere and the right result, a repeat tonight would do well.

Nice one. I totally agree that Gills must get results in the next 3 games (including tonights at Notts Co.). I feel we need at least 7 points to keep us in contention as we do have some tough games in the run in.

I feel that a playoff place will be the best we can achieve, but then again I have always been a pessimist when it comes to supporting the Gills.

It just wouldn't be right any other way really..

It's the ups and downs the jubilation and heartbreak that make being a Gills fan what it is. Wouldn't change any of it.

Great win last night, up to second (albeit maybe only briefly ) if we can continue to drag points in here and there then who knows...it's in our hands..

Good article fella, keep up the good work!

Another cracking article. its nice for gills fans to be protrayed in the correct way rather than the few who ruin it for the most. i agree with every point and after 3 point on tues night and with us now sitting in second the gills are once again going to be testing our emotions. i pretty sure there are no other club in the leagues that you can be fairly certain if they get promoted or just miss out on promotion or get relegated or just miss out on relegation they'll do it by goal difference, late goals both in our game or in game that looked fairly certain to help u out untill the 90th min

up the gills, keep the articles coming
